AccuWeigh recently completed the conversion of a mechanical weighbridge to fully-electronic near Ceduna, South Australia. The conversion involved the temporary removal of the weighbridge deck from the pit, the removal of the mechanical levers, knives and bearings, and the installation of load cells and load cell plinths.

The conversion was necessary because the mechanical components, which are hard to source and too expensive to manufacture, had worn out causing weighing inaccuracies and repeatability issues. The reliability and inexpensiveness of electronic components (load cells in particular) mean that fully-electronic weighbridges are often the preferred option.

The team at AccuWeigh have considerable experience in weighbridge conversions, having performed so many in the last ten to twenty years.

AccuWeigh favours using the AccuCell weighbridge load cell when performing these conversions. This is because the AccuCell is constructed of stainless steel and is hermetically sealed, which is ideal for use in weighbridges. Each load cell is rated to 30 tonne capacity. It also has a braided steel sheathing, which protects the cable against rodent damage.

AccuWeigh also supplied an IT8000E intelligent weighing terminal. This is able to address the load cells individually making weighbridge calibrations and eccentricity adjustments extremely quick and easy for a service technician – which is a big advantage over time consuming and costly adjustments with a mechanical weighbridge.

The IT8000E also connects directly to the site’s data collection system, which is very advantageous for customers and sites where data management is paramount.

Custom steel plinths were fabricated by AccuWeigh to help match the height of the existing deck with its previous position. In this manner, virtually any mechanical weighbridge can be converted to fully-electronic.

Conversion of a weighbridge may not necessarily be the best option. Sometimes installing a brand new weighbridge at a new location is a more economical option. However, AccuWeigh can provide advice on which option is the best for you.
